- Blot the spot of paint with a wet paper towel (if the paint is still wet).
- Apply hot water and some dish detergent to the spot and let it sit for a while to soften the paint (if it has dried).
- After it is softened, use something to scrape the paint stain, like a pin or a knife.
- While you are scraping, keep adding more of the hot water and detergent solution.
- If the scraping alone doesn’t work, try to use a handheld steamer while you scrape at the paint, until it is gone.
If you want to clean latex paint stains from your carpet…
- Once the paint is still wet, try to blot it out as much as possible with the wet paper towel.
- Make a solution of a teaspoon of dishwashing detergent and a cup of lukewarm water.
- Work the solution from the edge of the paint stain, down to the inside of it and keep blotting it.
- Let the area thoroughly dry and then vacuum the area.
If you want to clean oil-based paint stains from your carpet…
- Use a steamer to soften the paint if it has already dried, by applying the steam directly to the stain.
- While doing this, pick at the stain with a pin or needle and try to break it up.
- Keep on doing that until you have completely removed the stain, without damaging your carpet fibers.
