Old, scratched up, dull table in the middle of the dining room? It’s a really unsightly artifact, but you can bring it back to life. You can give it a brand new, finished look that all your visitors will marvel at, by just following the steps we provide for you in this article…

…but first, you’ll need to gather these tools and materials. You’ll need:

• Stain
• Stain brushes
• Rags
• Polyurethane
• 100-, 150- and 220-grit sandpaper
• Tack cloth
• Orbital or belt sander (optional)
• Router (optional)

Now, carefully follow these instructions:

1. Take the sandpaper and use it to sand the entire table, from the top to the bottom. Make sure that you remove all stains from the table. If you choose to use a belt or orbital sander, be careful not to cut into the surface.
– 100-grit & 150-grit sandpaper: Initial sanding and varnish removal.
– 220-grit sandpaper: Smoothing out the grain for the new finish.

2. Remove all of the sanding dust with a tack cloth.

3. Apply a generous amount of stain to the wood and then let it soak for a while. After that, you can wipe off the excess. The longer you leave it to soak in, the darker it will be.

4. Apply at least one more coat of stain. Remember that color depth and richness is dependent on the number of stains you apply to the table. If you notice that the wood fibers are swelling because of the stain, knock them down so that the surface of the wood remains leveled.

5. Wait till the final coating has dried completely. Then, read the manufacturer’s instructions to determine if you need to apply polyurethane to the table. If you do, apply about 4 coats and then let it dry for about 24 hours.

6. When it has fully dried, you can go ahead and use your beautiful “new” table.
